Why Nigerian Roads Fail Early — and the Spec That Stops It

Drive any federal corridor and you can read its construction history in the potholes. The failures cluster in patterns: alligator cracking where subgrade was never stabilised, edge collapse where drainage was value-engineered away, and rutting where a contractor chased tonnage instead of compaction. None of these begin at the surface. They begin in the bill of quantities.

Failure one: pretending the subgrade is fine

Nigerian lateritic soils are honest materials with dishonest reputations. Tested properly, many corridors return CBR values of 4–8% in the wet season — far below what a standard pavement design assumes. The cheap response is to design for the dry-season number and hope. The correct response costs 8–12% more upfront: cement or lime stabilisation, or geogrid reinforcement, lifting the effective platform above CBR 30%. On the Karu–Jikwoyi corridor this redesign actually saved money overall, because a stronger platform allowed a thinner, cheaper pavement stack.

Failure two: drainage as decoration

Water does not destroy roads dramatically; it destroys them administratively — one saturated wet season at a time. Side drains that stop 200m short of a discharge point, culverts sized from habit rather than catchment hydrology, medians that pond. Our rule on every corridor: the drainage design is reviewed by someone who did not produce it, against a 25-year storm, before earthworks begin. Boring, unglamorous, decisive.

Failure three: paying for tonnes, not density

Asphalt contracts priced purely per tonne invite a specific fraud: material spread thick and rolled thin. The fix is procedural, not moral. We tie interim payments to density cores and mat temperature logs — every 500 tonnes, independently sampled. Contractors grumble for exactly one project, then discover that a road that passes cores also passes final account without dispute.

What clients should actually demand

Three documents predict a road's lifespan better than any brand name: the wet-season geotechnical report, the drainage calculation package, and the compaction QA plan with payment linked to it. If a bid cannot produce all three, its low price is a loan you will repay through maintenance.
